Certified Adult Psychoanalytic Program

There are three areas within which the analytic candidate must prepare in order to complete the training program. These are personal analysis, course work, and clinical experience with control analysis.

1. Personal Analysis

Candidates must complete a personal analysis comprising a minimum of 450 hours with an Institute-approved psychoanalyst.

2. Frequency of Sessions

The personal analysis must include at least one year of sessions three times weekly.

3. Course Work

The curriculum comprises 30 courses. A maximum of 3 courses may be taken each semester. Students are encouraged to proceed at their own pace.

4. Control Analysis

Throughout the program, all clinical work is supervised by Institute supervisors and control analysts. First-year candidates and those who are waiting to meet the requirements for affiliation with the Clinic of the New Jersey Institute must be in supervision with an approved supervisor, designated by the Institute. Control analysis is the name given to focused and continuing psychoanalytic supervision of a psychoanalytic case. Candidates are engaged in control analysis on a weekly basis from the time they affiliate with the Clinic of the New Jersey Institute and throughout their training. Two control analyses of 75 hours each and one control analysis of 50 hours are required.

Class Schedule

First, third, and fifth-year courses meet on Thursday nights. Second and fourth year courses meet Wednesday nights. Classes begin in October.

Advanced Candidates

When candidates have completed the formal five-year academic course work, they move to the status of Advanced Candidates until they have completed the requirements for certification. During this time, they enter into weekly group supervision in the Advanced Technical Seminar for a two-year period.

A written case presentation and an oral interview by a committee are required for certification.

Candidates who have been certified and have graduated from the adult program in psychoanalysis are eligible to enter the two-year program in Supervision of the Psychoanalytic Process. The purpose of this program is to develop supervisory skills in psychoanalysis in order to apply for Control Analyst status at NJI or in other similar positions.

NEW DAY PROGRAM

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program

The curriculum follows the first three years of the Psychoanalytic Training Program and consists of 18 courses. The acceptance of a final case report by a committee of three members of the Institute and an oral interview based on the final case report are necessary for graduation. The patient on whom the final case report is based must be seen for a minimum of two times per week for two years.

Until the candidate is certified, attendance at a continuing case presentation seminar, designed to help candidates expand their clinical competence, is required.

The requirements for entry into the 3-year program are identical with those of the Psychoanalytic Program.

A candidate is required to have one year of supervision, followed by two years of more intensive supervision with two additional Supervisors, who are Institute-approved Control Analysts. The candidate must remain in intensive supervision until certified.

The candidate is required to have a minimum of 300 hours of personal analysis twice weekly. A frequency of three times a week is strongly recommended.

Requirements for affiliation with the Clinic of the New Jersey Institute are identical to those of the Psychoanalytic Program.

Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Studies Program (2 years)

The New Jersey Institute founded in 1972 was the first comprehensive psychoanalytic training institute in New Jersey. Initially affiliated with the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP), the Institute became a charter member of The National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis and the American Board for Accreditation in Psychoanalysis, Inc.

The Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Studies Program operates out of the belief that a psychoanalytic approach—with its emphasis on human development, on understanding the complexities of the normal phases that youngsters go through, as well as on its appreciation of the multiple factors that foster or interfere with that process—is especially suited to providing both a theoretical framework, as well as practical approach to helping professionals increase their knowledge of and thus enhance their work with children and adolescents.
